Safeguarding your corporate data

You’re probably well aware of the importance of defending your business and particularly its data from Cybercriminals. You’ve probably already taken steps to ensure that your data is unattainable to those who would seek to exploit it – you’ll have anti-virus software, you may use a secure VPN and you may be using the added backup protection offered by cloud storage.

A VPN…what’s that?

A VPN ‘Virtual private network’ is a service that makes your online activity anonymous and untraceable. It does this by routing the data you send out and receive through a remote server which could be located 1000s of miles away. This means that the IP address linked to your activity will be that of the remote server, not yours, thus keeping your online activity private. A VPN can enhance your privacy by hiding information such as:

  • Your browsing activity
  • IP address and location
  • Your device details
When you browse the internet, your internet service provider and some websites can track your activity and link it back to your IP address, a VPN prevents this. A VPN is also a particularly useful line of defence if you ever use unsecured public wi-fi networks.

In short, if you’re concerned about online privacy a VPN is something you should definitely consider for your business.

If your office is having to close because of the COVID-19 crisis you may find yourself having to provide your team with devices so that they can continue to operate from home. When doing so, it is important to ensure that device security is your number one priority.

In addition to using a VPN, you may also want to consider other security measures such as multi-factor authentication, an approved-device policy, device security settings policies as well as strict policies pertaining to the use and storage of data.
