What are Managed IT Services?

Josh Eyre • October 3, 2024

Managed IT Services are a comprehensive suite of services provided by external IT specialists to manage and support an organisation's technology infrastructure. These services include everything from network management and cybersecurity to data backup and recovery, allowing businesses to focus on their core activities while ensuring their IT systems run smoothly and efficiently.

Key components of Managed Service Providers (MSPs)

  • Proactive Monitoring: MSPs continuously monitor a company's IT environment (servers, networks, devices) to identify and resolve potential issues before they cause major problems.

  • Maintenance and Support: MSPs handle routine tasks such as software updates, security patches, troubleshooting, and hardware maintenance. This keeps systems up-to-date and running smoothly.

  • Security Management: Managed IT services typically include robust security solutions such as firewalls, antivirus protection, intrusion detection systems, and ongoing threat monitoring.

  • Backup and Disaster Recovery: MSPs provide data backup solutions and disaster recovery plans to protect against data loss and ensure quick recovery in case of incidents like hardware failures or cyberattacks.

  • Cloud Services: Many MSPs offer cloud infrastructure and management services, allowing businesses to migrate to or manage cloud-based systems, storage, and applications.

  • Helpdesk Support: MSPs often provide 24/7 helpdesk services to resolve technical issues for users within the organization, offering quick response times for troubleshooting.

  • Vendor Management: An MSP can manage relationships with hardware and software vendors, ensuring smooth procurement, licensing, and issue resolution.

  • Scalability and Flexibility: Managed IT services can be scaled up or down based on the company's needs, allowing for flexibility as business requirements change.

How do IT Managed Services work?

Manged IT services are usually offered on a subscription basis, so the business pays a certain amount depending on the amount of services provided. Most IT companies, like 1-Fix, will offer a defined set of services. The MSP becomes responsible for managing the organisation's IT infrastructure and tend to work behind the scenes to make sure that the system is secure, running efficiently and operational.
