What does this tech jargon mean?

Jo Mason • October 13, 2023

Since joining 1-Fix Limited, I've found myself surrounded by technology, even though I'm not exactly a tech expert. Like many of us, I've had to wade through a sea of tech jargon to stay informed and communicate effectively. I thought I would share some of the jargon that I've come across the most so far.

Cloud Computing ➡️ Online Data Storage

When someone talks about "cloud computing," they're essentially referring to storing data and running applications on the internet instead of your computer's hard drive. It's like saving your photos and files on an online storage platform.

Bandwidth ➡️ Internet Speed

Bandwidth represents the capacity of your internet connection. So, when someone mentions "high bandwidth," they mean a fast internet speed that allows you to stream videos, download files, and browse the web without interruptions.

Algorithm ➡️ Step-by-Step Recipe

An algorithm is a set of instructions used by computers to solve a problem. Think of it as a detailed recipe that tells you exactly what steps to follow to achieve a specific result.

Firewall ➡️ Security Barrier

A firewall is like a security guard for your computer. It acts as a barrier to keep unwanted guests (malware and hackers) from accessing your system, much like a physical wall keeps intruders out.

Encryption ➡️ Secret Code

Encryption is like turning your messages and data into secret codes that only you and the intended recipient can decipher. It's like writing your diary in a language only you and your best friend understand.

URL ➡️ Web Address

The next time someone mentions a "URL," remember that it's just a fancy way to talk about a web address, like www.1-fix.com. It's the online equivalent of your home's physical address.

Cache ➡️ Quick Access Memory

Techies might mention "cache" as if it's something mysterious, but it's merely a storage space on your computer that helps you access frequently used data quickly. Think of it as your computer's "quick access memory."

Cookie ➡️ Website Tracker

When a website asks if you accept cookies, they're not offering you a snack unfortunately. "Cookies" are small pieces of data that websites store on your computer to track your online behaviour. It's like the digital version of a store clerk remembering your preferences.

At 1-Fix Limited, we take pride in upholding one of our core values: 'No Geek Speak.' We believe in transparent communication and are always delighted to explain any tech terms to our clients, ensuring they are well-informed and confident in their tech decisions.
