Why is it important for care homes to have a data backup solution?

Craig Atkins • August 12, 2024

Data backup is not only a good practice, but a necessity for care homes that handle sensitive and confidential information. In this blog, we discuss what backup is, why it is important and how to choose the best solution for your care business.

What is data backup and why is it important?

Data backup is the process of creating and storing copies of data that can be used to restore the original data in case of data loss, corruption, or disaster. Data backup is important for any organisation that relies on data for its operations, but especially for care homes that handle personal and medical information of residents, staff, and visitors.

Data backup can help care homes to:

  • Protect data from accidental deletion, human error, hardware failure, cyberattacks, or natural disasters.
  • Comply with legal and regulatory requirements for data protection and privacy, such as the General Data Protection Regulation            (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Ensure business continuity and minimise downtime in case of data loss or disruption.
  • Improve customer trust and reputation by demonstrating that data is secure and accessible.
  • Reduce costs and risks associated with data recovery and restoration.

How to choose the best data backup solution for care homes?

There is no one-size-fits-all data backup solution for care homes, as each care home may have different needs, preferences, and resources. However, some of the factors that care homes should consider when choosing a data backup solution are:

  • The type and amount of data that needs to be backed up.
  • The frequency and schedule of data backup.
  • The budget and resources available for data backup.
  • The security and privacy of data backup.
  • The ease and speed of data recovery and restoration.
  • The compatibility and integration of data backup with existing systems and devices.

A good data backup solution for care homes should be:

  • Reliable and consistent, ensuring that data is backed up regularly and accurately.
  • Secure and compliant, ensuring that data is encrypted, protected, and in line with legal and ethical standards.
  • Flexible and scalable, ensuring that data backup can adapt to changing needs and demands.
  • Cost-effective and efficient, ensuring that data backup does not compromise the quality or performance of the service.

Different plans for 1-Fix data backup

At 1-Fix, we understand that different care homes have different data backup needs. That's why we offer three plans that can suit any level of data protection and support. Whether you want basic backup, disaster recovery, or business continuity, we guarantee that your data will be backed up securely and reliably, and that you will have access to our expert support team whenever you need it.

  • Backup plan: This is the most basic plan, suitable for those that only need a simple and reliable backup solution. As a low cost option, it provides a full system backup to the cloud, with 1 backup per day. This service will provide 28 days retention of data, and up to 2TB of off-site storage per server.

  • Disaster Recovery plan: This is the intermediate plan, suitable for care businesses that need a more frequent and comprehensive backup solution. It provides a full system backup to the cloud, with 4 backups per day. This service will provide 60 days retention of data, and up to 2TB of off-site storage per server. This service also provides a local data store (Hybrid backup) with a copy of the data kept on-site as well as off-site for a faster recovery time objective (RTO). This service includes quarterly restore tests of the backup data, to ensure that your data is always recoverable.

  • Business Continuity plan: This is the premium plan, suitable for care homes that need the best backup and recovery solution available. It provides a full system backup to the cloud, with 12 backups per day. This service will provide 90 days retention of data, and up to 2TB of off-site storage per server. This service also provides a local data store (Hybrid backup) with a copy of the data kept on-site as well as off-site. This service includes monthly restore tests of the backup data, to ensure that your data is always recoverable. Finally, this service includes a standby virtual machine in Microsoft Azure which keeps a recent copy of the backup data in Azure to allow for very quick disaster recovery restoration of servers within Microsoft Azure (this can also be replicated to a local hypervisor such as Hyper-V for quick local restore if the server is down but the site is still live). This service provides the shortest RTO and ensures the best business continuity for clients.
