Working at 1-Fix from an apprentice perspective

My time at 1-Fix

My name is Callum Hurst, and I’m a second-year apprentice at 1-Fix. I’ve written this blog to talk about my experiences as an apprentice so that others can find out more about it and how it works.

My First Few Months

When I first started the course at 1-Fix, I did not know a lot about computers, but I knew that I had the determination to learn, and I enjoyed working around them. For the first month of the course, I felt as if it was a very hard start and I quickly found out that I knew more about computers than I originally thought. This is when I quickly progressed to assigning myself more in-depth tickets which took a lot more thought process than others. This was so I was able to challenge myself and throw myself in at the deep end.

Months 3-6

Moving into the third month, I started to do onsite visits with my colleagues. This was when I really started to enjoy the job and meeting the clients who I previously spoke to over the phone - it was nice to be able to put a face to the name. I quickly became confident at being able to go out onsite as this was giving me the experiences that I needed to build my confidence up.

Months 6 - 12

Moving into the sixth month on the apprenticeship, unfortunately I was put on furlough due to the workload decreasing at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. This made it a big struggle to stay focused on my apprenticeship and keep the ball rolling.

However, after approximately 2 months, I was then brought back into the office to continue working. This has helped me stay focused on building my knowledge and continuing to learn new areas in the IT industry that I have not touched on before. I learned quickly to pick straight back up from where I left off and start striving to complete all my exams and course work for the apprenticeship deadlines.

Months 12-15

Towards the end of my apprenticeship, it has been a very difficult time due to the global pandemic and learning something new at the same time. I have enjoyed my time at 1-Fix and cannot thank the staff enough for giving me a chance to show them and our clients my dedication to learn new things.

At the start of my apprenticeship I did not know a lot about computers, and it was a big challenge. Now I am nearing the end of my apprenticeship I am much more confident to answer the phone without hesitation, deal with more complex tickets and undertake on-site visits alone.

Not only has the apprenticeship allowed me to build my knowledge, but I have been able to meet some amazing people along the way.
