What is Cyber Essentials and why do I need it?

Lee Dugdale • March 13, 2024

Cyber Essentials was launched in June 2014. It was started to help companies focus on controls within their organisations to mitigate the increasing cyber-attacks at that time.

What Is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is an effective, Government backed scheme that will help you to protect your organisation, whatever its size, against a whole range of the most common cyber attacks (National Cyber Security Centre).

Cyber Essentials is a self-assessment accreditation. By implementing the Cyber Essentials technical controls, a company increases its protection against common cyber-attacks. The certification lasts for 12 months and is required by suppliers to the UK government who handle sensitive information or data.

Why should I get Cyber Essentials?

  • Having a Cyber Essential certification identifies that your company values your customer's data security.
  • It promotes your company as actively working against potential cyber-attacks.
  • It is a clear benchmark of your organisation’s cyber security level.
  • It may help attract new business by showing the security measures you have in place.
  • UK government contracts may require Cyber Essentials certification.

How much does it cost?

You can purchase the Cyber Essentials certification from the Cyber Essentials partner, IASME, directly. Depending on the size of your business, the price ranges from £300-500.

It is suspected within the tech community that eventually a Cyber Essentials certification will become compulsory for organisations. We would advise all businesses to consider adding the Cyber Essentials accreditation to their IT roadmap for 2024.
