How to Delete Unnecessary Folders to Free Storage on your Computer

Callum Hurst • January 12, 2024

Every now and then, your computer may alert you that its discs are running low on space. This happens when your saved folders and downloads are using up most of your device's storage. To solve this, we've put together a few easy steps on how to reduce your storage.

Disk Clean-up

Disk Clean-up is a tool provided by Microsoft. The tool is designed to search your hard drive for temporary files, internet cache files and any unnecessary programs that you can safely delete. Once it has detected the files, you’ll have options and can pick which ones to delete.

To use Disk Clean-up, simply press the windows key on your keyboard and search ‘Disk Clean-up’. The application should be pre-installed on your device and will run a quick check before giving you the option to run the clean-up.

Delete downloads content.

Your downloads folder can play a huge part in your computers storage. When you download a large file from the internet, do you ever go back and delete it? A good practice would be to delete everything in your downloads folder, once a month. This would get rid of any unnecessary files you don’t need on your computer.

Upload documents onto OneDrive

Turning OneDrive sync onto your computer allows you to setup ‘On Demand Sync’. This means that all your documents will be stored in the cloud. When you open a file, it will download a copy to your computer for 30 days. If its not used again, it would delete the downloaded file itself from your computer and be stored in the cloud again freeing up space.
