What is the PSTN Switch-Off?

What is PTSN? Why are they stopping it & what does it mean for my business?

These are all questions you may have after hearing about the PSTN switch-off. In this blog, we explain everything you need to know to prepare your business for the switch-off.

What is PSTN?

The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is basically the old-fashioned phone system that uses circuits to connect calls, whether they are voice or data, over traditional phone lines.

What is the PSTN Switch-Off? And why is it happening?

In September 2023, there was a nationwide stop on selling a traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) service. This marked the beginning of BT Openreach phase-out of PSTN & ISDN services, with the complete switch-off planned for 2025.

This legacy PSTN technology wasn't built to handle the speed or the integrated signalling systems to carry all three media (voice, video, and data). As a result, it's no longer suitable for its intended purpose.

What does this mean for my business?

Before December 2025 (if you haven’t already), you’ll need to move from PSTN to a digital, internet-based service. It is advisable to do this before the switch-off to ensure you don’t temporarily lose service.

  1. You'll need to switch to a VoIP-based phone plan (if you currently have a landline that uses the PSTN).

   2.  Upgrade your internet connection (if you are still using an ADSL or FTTC internet connection that runs over an analogue PSTN telephone line).

The change may also affect services like security and fire alarms, telecare devices, and retail payment terminals as these services may rely on specific features of the PSTN that may not be fully replicated in VoIP platforms.

Benefits of the PSTN Switch-Off

  • Reliable and faster broadband - Compared to traditional copper line-based broadband, full-fibre broadband offers greater reliability and faster speeds.

  • Better collaboration - systems using tools like Microsoft Teams and CRMs like Salesforce will benefit from streamlined business processes, fostering collaboration and innovation.

  • Increased efficiency – VoIP services, which are more scalable and efficient, can be a more cost-effective solution.

  • Greater sustainability - Full fibre connectivity is more energy-efficient and requires fewer resources than PSTN lines, creating a more sustainable communication infrastructure.
